Compassion is the central theme of Guru Nanak Dev's teachings. His world view is rational, liberal and humane. The essence of spirituality is inherent in each one of us - it is compassion. A strong need to share and care for others was deeply etched in Guru Nanak from a very young age. Guru Nanak believed that every religion was in essence a different path to the same end. He was a firm advocate of equality and was of the view that: "he who regards all as equals is truly religious."
When I read the manuscript of 'The Guru: Guru Nanak's Saakhis, I was truly fascinated. This collection of short stories about Guru Nanak Dev provide an insight into the life and teachings of a wise, rational and compassionate spiritual leader who walked this earth five centuries ago. He was a reformer and his teachings were radical and extremely relevant in the stratified society of his times. They are just as relevant today in a world that continues to have much the same issues world that is at war with itself. a
